Weigh Safe

Weigh Safe — Ball Mounts with Built-In Tongue Weight Scales for Safer Towing

Weigh Safe produces one of the most practical and safety-focused innovations in the towing accessories market — ball mounts with a built-in hydraulic tongue weight scale that allows the driver to measure actual trailer tongue weight at the hitch ball before every tow. Correct tongue weight is one of the most critical factors in safe trailer towing, and Weigh Safe's integrated scale eliminates the guesswork that leads to dangerous towing conditions caused by incorrect tongue weight — without requiring a separate scale, a trip to a weigh station, or any additional equipment.

Why Tongue Weight Matters

Tongue weight — the downward force the trailer exerts on the hitch ball — should be 10–15% of the total loaded trailer weight for correct towing stability. Too little tongue weight causes trailer sway, which is the leading cause of towing accidents and loss of vehicle control. Too much tongue weight overloads the rear axle, reduces front axle traction and steering control, and can exceed the hitch's tongue weight rating. Without a way to measure actual tongue weight, most drivers are towing with an unknown and potentially dangerous tongue weight every time they hook up a trailer.

Built-In Hydraulic Scale

Weigh Safe ball mounts incorporate a hydraulic pressure gauge in the shank of the ball mount that reads actual tongue weight directly in pounds as the trailer is loaded onto the hitch ball. The scale requires no batteries, no calibration, and no additional equipment — it reads tongue weight mechanically through the hydraulic pressure generated by the tongue weight load on the ball mount. The gauge face is clearly marked with the correct tongue weight range for easy verification that the trailer is loaded correctly before departure.

The measurement process is straightforward — hook up the trailer, lower the trailer tongue onto the hitch ball, and read the tongue weight directly from the gauge. If the tongue weight is outside the correct range, adjust the trailer load distribution before towing. The entire process takes seconds and provides the information needed to make a safe towing decision before leaving the driveway.

Adjustable Drop Ball Mounts

Weigh Safe ball mounts are available in adjustable drop configurations that allow the correct ball height to be set for each trailer being towed, ensuring the trailer rides level regardless of the tow vehicle's hitch height. Adjustable drop range covers the most common hitch height and trailer coupler height combinations, with drop increments that allow precise level trailer positioning. The adjustable design eliminates the need for multiple fixed-drop ball mounts for different trailers — a single Weigh Safe mount covers the full range of trailer heights being towed.

Ball Sizes & Hitch Receiver Compatibility

Weigh Safe ball mounts are available with 1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16" hitch balls to match the coupler size of different trailer types. The ball is replaceable, allowing the correct ball size to be installed for each trailer without purchasing a new ball mount. Hitch receiver compatibility covers standard 2" and 2-1/2" receiver sizes on most domestic trucks and SUVs, with correct shank dimensions and correct receiver fit for each supported receiver size.

Common Applications

Weigh Safe ball mounts are used by truck and SUV owners who tow boat trailers, campers, travel trailers, fifth wheels, horse trailers, equipment trailers, and any other trailer where correct tongue weight is critical for safe towing. The built-in scale is particularly valuable for trailers where the load distribution changes between trips — such as boat trailers where the boat position affects tongue weight, or cargo trailers where the load placement varies.

Build Quality & Materials

Weigh Safe ball mounts are constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel for a combination of light weight and corrosion resistance that outlasts chrome-plated steel ball mounts in the outdoor towing environment. The hydraulic scale mechanism is sealed against moisture and road debris for reliable operation across years of towing use. Weigh Safe products are rated for the tongue weight and gross trailer weight capacities required for the most common towing applications on domestic trucks and SUVs.

Installation Notes

Weigh Safe ball mounts install in the standard 2" or 2-1/2" hitch receiver using the provided hitch pin and clip. Set the correct drop height by adjusting the shank position and securing the locking mechanism before towing. Verify the ball size matches the trailer coupler before hooking up. The tongue weight scale reads correctly only when the trailer is fully coupled to the hitch ball and the trailer jack is fully retracted — do not read tongue weight with the trailer jack in contact with the g...
