NOS/Nitrous Oxide System

NOS — The Original Nitrous Oxide System

NOS — Nitrous Oxide Systems — is the brand that put nitrous oxide on the performance map, pioneering the use of nitrous as a practical, street-legal power adder for domestic performance vehicles since the 1970s. As the most recognized name in nitrous performance, NOS produces complete nitrous kits, bottles, solenoids, and accessories that have been trusted by street racers, bracket racers, and performance enthusiasts for decades. If you know nitrous, you know NOS.

Complete Nitrous Kits

NOS complete nitrous kits include everything required for a full installation — nitrous bottle, solenoids, nozzle or plate, jets, activation switch, wiring harness, plumbing, and mounting hardware. Kits are available in wet and dry configurations for carbureted and EFI applications, with plate and direct port delivery options depending on the power level and induction system being used.

The NOS Cheater kit is one of the most popular entry-level nitrous systems in the industry, providing a straightforward wet plate installation for carbureted small block applications with a power range of 100–250 hp depending on jet selection. The Super Powershot and Big Shot kits step up the power potential for builds targeting larger shots, with higher-flow solenoids and larger jet options to support the increased nitrous and fuel flow required.

Dry EFI Nitrous Systems

NOS dry nitrous systems for EFI applications deliver nitrous only through the nozzle, relying on the factory fuel injectors — commanded by the ECU — to supply the additional fuel required for the nitrous shot. Dry systems are the preferred approach for modern EFI vehicles where the ECU can be tuned to add fuel in response to nitrous activation, providing cleaner integration with the factory engine management system without the fuel delivery complexity of a wet system on a returnless fuel setup.

Nitrous Bottles

NOS produces nitrous bottles in a range of capacities — from compact 2.5 lb bottles for tight installations to 10 lb and 15 lb bottles for extended race use. NOS bottles are manufactured to DOT specifications with a high-flow valve and safety burst disc. The iconic blue NOS bottle is one of the most recognized components in performance motorsport, and NOS produces both standard and lightweight aluminum bottle options for weight-sensitive builds.

Solenoids & Components

NOS solenoids control the flow of nitrous and fuel with precise, repeatable actuation on every activation. High-flow solenoid options are available for large-shot applications, and NOS produces replacement solenoids, rebuild kits, and service parts to support the full product lineup over its service life. Purge valves, bottle heaters, and pressure gauges round out the NOS accessory lineup for builders who want a complete, properly supported nitrous system.

Common Applications

NOS nitrous systems cover carbureted and EFI domestic V8 applications — Small Block and Big Block Chevy, GM LS and LT, Small Block and Big Block Ford, Ford Coyote, and Chrysler/Mopar V8 platforms. Import performance kits are available for Honda, Toyota, Subaru, and other popular platforms. Power levels range from 50 hp street shots through 300+ hp plate system applications, with direct port systems available for race engines targeting maximum power potential.

Safety & Supporting Modifications

Nitrous oxide systems require supporting modifications appropriate for the power level being added. Ignition timing retard — typically 2–3 degrees per 50 hp of nitrous — is required to prevent detonation under nitrous activation. Fuel system capacity must support the additional fuel demand of the nitrous shot without pressure drop. Engine internal strength — pistons, rods, and bearings — must be appropriate for the cylinder pressure increase generated by the nitrous. NOS provides power level guidelines and supporting modification recommendations for each kit in the lineup.

Installation Notes

NOS kits include detailed installation instructions with wiring diagrams, jet selection charts, and activation guidelines. Bottle mounting should position the bottle as close to level as possible for consistent liquid nitrous delivery. Activation wiring connects to a wide-open-throttle switch and a driver-controlled arming switch — never activate nitrous below full throttle or at low RPM. A purge valve is recommended for race applications to clear vapor from the nitrous line before the first pass, ensuring liquid nitrous reaches the solenoid immediately on activation.
