MSD — The Industry Standard in High-Performance Ignition Systems

MSD has been engineering high-performance ignition systems since 1970, building the most recognized brand in performance ignition through decades of dominance on the drag strip, oval track, and street. The MSD 6AL ignition box is one of the most widely installed performance ignition components in history, and the full MSD lineup today covers everything from ignition boxes and distributors to coils, spark plug wires, crank triggers, and complete ignition system solutions for every level of street and race build.

Ignition Boxes & Controllers

MSD ignition boxes are the core of the MSD system, delivering multiple sparks per firing event at low RPM to ensure complete combustion in engines with marginal compression, rich fuel mixtures, or worn spark plugs. The 6AL, 6AL-2, and 6LS series cover the most popular applications — from classic points-triggered distributors through modern LS and LT coil-near-plug systems. The 6AL-2 adds a two-step rev limiter for launch control on drag race applications, while the 6LS is purpose-built for GM LS engine management integration.

The MSD Digital 7 and Digital 6 Plus represent the advanced end of the ignition controller lineup, with programmable timing curves, data logging, and PC interface capability for race engines where precise ignition timing control across the RPM range is a tuning priority. These units replace the distributor advance mechanism with a fully programmable timing map that can be optimized for the specific engine combination and fuel being used.

Distributors

MSD produces ready-to-run and points-replacement distributors for Small Block and Big Block Chevy, Ford, and Mopar V8 applications. Ready-to-run distributors include an internal ignition module that eliminates the need for a separate ignition box on street applications, simplifying the ignition system while delivering improved spark output over OEM ignition. Pro-Billet distributors are machined from billet aluminum with precision bearing support for the distributor shaft, eliminating the shaft wobble that causes timing scatter in high-RPM race applications.

Coils & Coil-Near-Plug Systems

MSD produces a comprehensive range of ignition coils for both distributor-based and coil-near-plug applications. Blaster series coils deliver increased secondary voltage output for distributor-based ignition systems, improving spark intensity at high RPM where coil saturation time becomes a limiting factor. LS and LT coil-near-plug replacements provide improved output over OEM coils for GM Gen III, IV, and V engine applications, with direct plug-in fitment on supported platforms.

Spark Plug Wires

MSD Super Conductor spark plug wires are the benchmark for performance ignition wire sets, combining extremely low resistance with effective RFI suppression in a spiral-wound conductor design. Low resistance maximizes the voltage delivered to the spark plug, while the spiral winding suppresses radio frequency interference that affects electronic engine management systems and in-car electronics. Wire sets are available in multiple colors and configurations for popular domestic V8 applications.

Crank Triggers & Timing Accessories

MSD crank trigger systems provide a more accurate RPM and timing reference signal than a distributor-based pickup, eliminating the timing scatter caused by distributor shaft flex and bearing wear at high RPM. Crank triggers are standard equipment on serious drag race engines where consistent ignition timing is critical for repeatable ET and maximum power output. MSD produces crank trigger kits for Small Block and Big Block Chevy, Ford, and Mopar applications with multiple trigger wheel configurations for different timing reference requirements.

Common Applications

MSD ignition products cover virtually every domestic V8 platform — Small Block and Big Block Chevy, GM LS (Gen III and IV), GM LT (Gen V), Small Block and Big Block Ford, Ford Coyote and Modular, Chrysler/Mopar V8, and Pontiac. Ignition boxes are compatible with both points and electronic distributor triggers, covering classic and modern applications from a single product line.

Installation Notes

MSD ignition box installations require correct wiring to the distributor trigger, coil, and switched 12V power source. Follow the MSD wiring diagram precisely — incorrect wiring is the most common cause of ignition system problems after installation. The magnetic pickup in MSD distributors requires a specific air gap between the pickup and reluctor wheel — verify this gap during installation per the MSD specification. Crank trigger installations require precise trigger wheel positioning relative to TDC for correct timing reference — professional installation is recommended for first-time crank trigger setups.
