UniSteer Performance — Electric Power Steering Conversions for Classic Cars & Hot Rods

UniSteer Performance specializes in electric power steering (EPS) conversion kits for classic cars, hot rods, and custom builds — providing a modern, self-contained power steering solution that eliminates the hydraulic pump, hoses, fluid reservoir, and belt-driven parasitic load of a conventional hydraulic power steering system. For builders who want power-assisted steering without the complexity and maintenance of a hydraulic system, or who are building a vehicle where a hydraulic pump installation is impractical, UniSteer's EPS conversion kits provide a clean, adjustable alternative that installs in the existing steering column location.

Electric Power Steering Conversion Kits

UniSteer EPS conversion kits replace the factory steering column or integrate with the existing steering shaft to add electric power assist through a self-contained motor and controller assembly. The electric assist motor provides steering assistance proportional to steering input and vehicle speed — delivering light, effortless steering at low speeds for parking and maneuvering, and progressively firmer, more communicative steering at higher speeds for confident highway and performance driving.

The self-contained design requires only a 12V power connection and a vehicle speed signal input — no hydraulic pump, no hoses, no fluid, and no belt-driven accessory load on the engine. This simplifies the engine bay significantly on builds where eliminating the power steering pump is a packaging or appearance priority, and eliminates the ongoing maintenance of hydraulic fluid changes and hose inspection.

Adjustable Steering Feel

UniSteer EPS systems include an adjustable assist level that allows the driver to tune the steering feel from maximum assist for easy low-speed maneuvering to minimum assist for a more direct, road-feel-oriented driving experience. The adjustment is made through a control knob or switch mounted in the cockpit, allowing the driver to change the assist level to match the driving environment without tools or reconfiguration. This adjustability is a significant advantage over hydraulic power steering systems where assist level is fixed by the pump pressure and valve calibration.

Applications & Compatibility

UniSteer EPS conversion kits are engineered for classic GM, Ford, and Mopar applications — including 1955–1957 Chevrolet Tri-Five, 1964–1972 GM A-body, 1967–1969 Camaro and Firebird, classic Ford Mustang, and a range of additional classic car and hot rod platforms. Universal kits are available for custom and non-standard applications where a direct-fit kit is not available, with correct shaft diameter and spline configurations for the most common steering shaft sizes used in custom builds.

Installation Benefits

The primary installation benefit of a UniSteer EPS conversion is the elimination of the hydraulic power steering system — removing the pump, reservoir, hoses, and fluid from the engine bay and freeing up the belt-driven accessory load for additional power at the wheels. On classic cars where the factory power steering pump location conflicts with aftermarket headers, intake manifolds, or engine swap components, eliminating the hydraulic system entirely resolves the packaging conflict without compromising steering assistance.

EPS systems also eliminate the steering pull that occurs when a hydraulic power steering pump loses pressure at idle or under high electrical load — a common complaint on classic cars with marginal charging systems and high-demand accessories. The electric motor draws current only when steering assist is needed, reducing the average electrical load compared to a continuously running hydraulic pump.

Build Quality & Engineering

UniSteer EPS systems are engineered for the voltage and temperature environment of automotive use, with motor and controller components rated for the current draw and duty cycle of power steering assist applications. The controller provides overcurrent and thermal protection to prevent damage from sustained high-load steering inputs. Shaft and coupling components are manufactured to correct dimensional tolerances for correct steering shaft alignment and smooth, rattle-free operation.

Installation Notes

UniSteer EPS installations require a clean 12V power source with correct wire gauge for the motor's current draw, a chassis ground connection, and a vehicle speed signal from the ECU, ABS module, or a standalone speed sensor. The speed signal is required for the speed-sensitive assist function — without a speed signal, the system defaults to a fixed assist level. Steering shaft alignment must be correct after installation to prevent binding and ensure smooth, consistent assist across the full steering range. A professional alignment is recommended after installatio...
