IDIDIT — Custom Tilt Steering Columns for Hot Rods, Street Rods & Classic Builds

IDIDIT is the benchmark manufacturer for aftermarket steering columns in the hot rod, street rod, and classic car market. Built in Tecumseh, Michigan, every IDIDIT column is engineered to deliver modern tilt functionality, collapsible safety, and clean aesthetics in a package that installs correctly in the widest range of custom and classic vehicle applications. Whether you're building a traditional hot rod, a restomod muscle car, or a custom chassis from scratch, IDIDIT has a column configuration engineered for the application.

Tilt Steering Columns

IDIDIT tilt columns are available in a comprehensive range of lengths, diameters, and configurations to match the specific requirements of each build. Tilt functionality allows the driver to adjust the steering wheel angle for entry and exit comfort and optimal driving position — a feature that was unavailable on most classic vehicles from the factory and is one of the most appreciated upgrades in a custom interior build.

Column lengths are available in standard and custom configurations to accommodate different firewall-to-dash distances across a wide range of chassis types. Shaft diameter and lower coupling options are matched to the steering box or rack-and-pinion being used, with universal joint and rag joint configurations available for correct alignment with the steering gear input shaft.

Column Styles & Finishes

IDIDIT produces columns in chrome, paintable steel, brushed aluminum, and black powder coat finishes to match the aesthetic of different build styles. Floor shift, column shift, and keyed ignition configurations are available depending on the transmission and ignition system being used. Turn signal and hazard switch provisions are integrated into select column configurations for builds that require functional lighting controls through the column.

Tilt and non-tilt options are available across the lineup — non-tilt columns are the correct choice for period-correct builds where a tilt mechanism would be anachronistic, while tilt columns suit restomod and custom builds where driver comfort and modern functionality are priorities.

Collapsible Safety Design

All IDIDIT columns incorporate a collapsible safety design that absorbs energy in a frontal impact, reducing the risk of steering column intrusion into the driver compartment. This is a critical safety feature for street-driven builds and is required for vehicles registered for road use in most jurisdictions. IDIDIT's collapsible design meets or exceeds current safety standards without compromising the column's structural integrity during normal driving.

Common Applications

IDIDIT columns are used across the full spectrum of custom and classic vehicle builds — traditional hot rods and street rods, 1955–1957 Chevrolet Tri-Five builds, GM A-body and F-body muscle cars, Ford Mustang and full-size Ford restomod projects, Mopar B-body and E-body builds, custom tube-frame chassis, and kit car applications. IDIDIT's column mounting provisions and lower shaft configurations cover the most popular steering box and rack-and-pinion combinations used in these applications.

Wiring & Accessory Integration

IDIDIT columns include provisions for turn signal, hazard, horn, and ignition switch wiring depending on the configuration selected. Wiring harness adapters are available to interface IDIDIT column switches with popular aftermarket and OEM wiring systems, simplifying the electrical integration of the column into the vehicle's existing or new wiring harness. Steering wheel adapters are available for mounting Grant, Ididit, and other popular aftermarket steering wheels to the IDIDIT column shaft.

Build Quality & USA Manufacturing

Every IDIDIT column is designed and manufactured in the USA using domestic steel and precision CNC-machined components. Tilt mechanisms are built to withstand the repeated use cycles of a daily-driven vehicle without developing slop or looseness over time. Finish quality on chrome and polished aluminum columns is show-car grade, with paintable steel columns providing a clean surface for body-color or custom paint finishes.

Installation Notes

IDIDIT column installations require correct lower shaft alignment to the steering box or rack input, proper column mounting bracket fabrication or selection for the specific chassis, and correct wiring integration for all switch functions. Column drop and mounting bracket kits are available for popular applications to simplify the installation. A professional alignment of the steering shaft U-joints is critical to eliminate vibration and binding through the full range of steering travel.
